The project was developed during my residency at Gallery Syster in Lulea, Sweden in 2017. During the initial phase of the residency here, a suite of small drawings was developed using oil pastels and etching on paper. These drawings introduced a new formal development, where for the first time, the elements of the drawn forms began to physically jut out of the surface of paper. This movement beyond the flat plane might have emerged as a response to the architecture of the city itself, where its structural elements often seem to be interrupting or jutting outwards from the otherwise continuous surface of an architectural plane.

A site-specific intervention was also created within the residency, and as a part of my ongoing ‘Drawing in Space’ series. Unlike the longer-term site-specific interventions that had previously allowed several weeks of engagement with an architectural space, this work was conceived as a smaller and more immediate intervention, shaped by the temporary nature and limited timeframe available. Moreover, these works served as an introduction to my presentation that I was developing for the larger audience during my residency. They formed a representative glimpse into the trajectory of my practice, process, and spatial enquiries.

This site-specific work carried forward the central idea of, and continued to draw from my ‘Black Drawings’ series. Composed of threads, nails and glue, the installation was aimed towards expanding linear drawing into the spatial surroundings and beyond the constraints of its inherent two-dimensional edges. Whereby, the site-specific work generates shifting geometries that evolve with the viewer’s movement, transform architecture into an active participant, and turns observation into an embodied interaction within the dynamic spatial composition.
